The Ninth is the last of Bruckner’s monumental symphonies. He left the final part incomplete, but the three completed parts are an overwhelming tribute to God, his most important source of inspiration. In addition to deep religiosity, this music also expresses fear and despair: Bruckner knew that death was near. The intense expressiveness of this work makes it one of the most impressive orchestral works ever – a tour of strength for the musicians and a unique experience for the listener.

The concert opens with parts from Wagner’s Parsifal, the opera with which Gatti was successful at the Wagner festival in Bayreuth in four consecutive years.

Live recording, 5 and 7 January 2018, Concertgebouw Amsterdam
